Love At First Sniff

Original artwork by the poet

We first met in Costa
she came from Brazil.
I’m hooked on her caffeine
I can’t get my fill.
And now every morning
I turn to her first.
Her heady aroma
igniting my thirst.
Enamored, en-captured,
whatever you will.
We first met in Costa…
she came from Brazil.

A Fun Ritual

Image by Engin Akyurt from Pixabay

It is a family fun ritual every sunrise.
As you awaken to the chirping of the birds outside.
The swaying of the branches in the breeze,
That miserable alarm clock does not please.
You run downstairs to the kitchen sink.
For water to brew your favorite morning drink.
The addictive smell opens your eyes to a new day.
A cup brimming over makes you happy and gay.
Without it, you cannot survive the day’s tasks.
At a time when you’re required to wear masks.
Each sip adds spunk to everything you do.
People all over the world love that drink too.

Girding Her Loins

Selfie of the poet

Foggy from the inside
she stumbles to the kitchen.
Routine-trained hands
operate without instruction.
Fingers grasp the canister
and spill only a little
flakey consciousness
on the cluttered counter.
It spirals in a drop of water
while the plastic machine
burbles comfortingly,
red light blinking.
Already, the smell promises rescue,
a charge of hope sparks —
all is not truly lost.
Pouring the steaming brew
she breathes in assurance.
The cavalry has come.
Her battles may yet be won.

Morning Thoughts While Barely Awake!

Photo taken by the poet

Shiny, black beans ground and brewed,
aromatic bliss, a kiss upon my lips,
a caress down my willing throat,

Yet rationed as if
it could possibly be
too much of a good thing.

Naked and strong,
it wakes my mind from foggy dreams,
wafting in steamy currents beneath my nose!

Swirls of caramel and cream
smooth my rough edges,
soothe my mood.

Soon I will be ready
to begin my day
or have a second cup,

My co-conspirator in delay.

Sweet Addiction

Infographic created by the poet

Steam rising and dancing
Across the rippling midnight pool
The welcome caress of vapors
Sensual and inviting,
The warming embrace of aroma
Now flooding ethereal white
Swirling deep to rise
Till clink, tink, clank, chink
The pool now renders
A devine decoction
That distillation of welcoming dawn
Smooth and rich and just right sweet
Porcelain vessel of joy

Drink of the Sultans

Photo taken by the poet

Drink of Sultans
Of Beduin tribesmen too
Turkish or Greek?
It’s up to you.
It’s all political,
Like an Ulster Fry,
Which you too must enjoy
Before you die!
